Australian Landscapes
Re-emergence
Acrylic on Canvas
A walk through a park in Sydney took us past a burnt out area, but it was good to see green shoots making they way anew. We were in Sydney to celebrate the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy. As part of the celebrations the tall-ship Lady Nelson took part and I helped crew her back to Hobart.

Golden Arch
Acrylic on canvas board
We took a boat trip round Bruny Isle in Tasmania on a windy day which made for quite a bumpy ride. The views were excellent and at one point the boat passed by an arch under colourful algae and lichen on the rocks. It was only on my last day having a coffee with a fellow artist I discovered it was known as the golden arch.

Hidden Water Exhibition 2015
Paintings from a solo exhibition: Hidden Water at The Nolan Gallery, Hobart. Based on hidden water including streams, coves, waterfalls and ground water. Spending time in Tasmania gave me an opportunity to exhibit using a variety of images. I enjoy the interplay of ground and foreground, textures, shapes, and spaces in-between which result in a rich tapestry of colour with an intimate look at the natural environment.
Eden
Acrylic on canvas
On the sail back from Sydney to Hobart we moored up in Eden to wait for good weather before crossing the Tasman Straits. Eden used to be known for whale hunting and is now known for whale watching and is a popular picturesque town.
I loved the turquoise clear sea in the cove with the pink rocks seen next to greenery on the cliff looking down.
The tall-ship Lady Nelson was in Sydney to celebrate the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy, and I was one of the crew, a senior deckhand, taking her home to Hobart.

Stalactites Reflected
Acrylic on canvas board
A floor in a lime-stone cave in Hastings, Tasmania. I loved the ridges on the cave floor formed by 100's of years build up of tiny walls of stalagmites with the reflection of stalactites reflected in the small pools.

Sunlight on Boulders

Captured during an extremely hot & humid walk in a small forest near Kuala Lumpur. I loved the dappled light on the mossy lichen covered rocks and the dazzling light on some of the rocks wet with clear fresh water.

Jewel Exhibition, Nolan Gallery, Hobart, 2013
Paintings from a trip up to the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania. We took a long walk from our cabin through a richly coloured landscape, enhanced by recent rain: coral fern carpeting the ground, emerald mosses, golden button grass and an unusually clear blue sky.

Lone Tree in Button Grass
Oil on canvas
Painted in Tasmania after a walk up near Cradle Mountain. Many centuries ago it was said that Aboriginal Australians had burnt the area to help with hunting. Only button grass grew back and it covers hectares of land. It is full of tannin which must stop trees from getting a hold. The water from the springs tastes like tea!

Striations of Colour
Oil on canvas
I loved the bands of colour leading up to Cradle Mountain in the distance. Unusually we were there one weekend when it hardly rained at all - the colours were heightened by everything being wet and blossoming in the springtime.
